5 Essential Commands Every Dog Should Know

Training your dog isn't just about teaching tricks—it's about building communication, establishing trust, and keeping your furry friend safe. Whether you have a new puppy or an adult dog, these five essential commands form the foundation of good behavior and can literally save your dog's life in dangerous situations.

At DogVaca, we've trained hundreds of dogs using positive reinforcement techniques, and we've seen firsthand how these basic commands transform the relationship between dogs and their owners. Let's dive into the five commands every dog should master.

1. SIT - The Foundation Command

"Sit" is often the first command dogs learn, and for good reason. It's simple, useful in countless situations, and builds the foundation for more advanced training. Use "sit" before meals, when greeting people, at doorways, and any time your dog needs to calm down and focus.

How to teach it: Hold a treat close to your dog's nose, then slowly move it up and back over their head. As their head follows the treat, their bottom will naturally lower. The moment their rear touches the ground, say "Sit," give them the treat, and offer praise. Repeat this 5-10 times per training session.

2. STAY - Building Self-Control

"Stay" teaches your dog patience and self-control, two critical skills for a well-behaved pet. This command is essential for safety—imagine your dog staying put while you answer the door, or remaining still while you prepare their food.

How to teach it: Start with your dog in a sitting position. Open your palm in front of you and say "Stay." Take one step back. If they stay, return and reward them. Gradually increase the distance and duration. If they break the stay, calmly return them to position and try again with less distance or time.

3. COME - The Lifesaving Recall

A reliable recall can literally save your dog's life. Whether they slip out the door, get off-leash accidentally, or encounter a dangerous situation, "come" brings them back to safety immediately. This is perhaps the most important command you'll ever teach.

How to teach it: Start in a low-distraction environment. Put your dog on a long leash, crouch down, and enthusiastically say "Come!" while gently pulling the leash. When they reach you, celebrate with treats and praise. Make coming to you the best thing ever! Gradually practice in more distracting environments, always keeping the experience positive.

4. DOWN - Promoting Calmness

"Down" is more than just lying down—it's about teaching your dog to relax on command. This command is perfect for calming an excited dog, managing behavior in public spaces, or simply getting your pup to settle during family time.

How to teach it: From a sitting position, hold a treat in front of your dog's nose. Slowly lower it straight down to the ground between their paws. As they follow the treat, their elbows should touch the ground. Say "Down" and immediately reward. Some dogs learn this quickly; others need patience. Never push your dog down—let them figure it out.

5. LEAVE IT - Preventing Problems

"Leave it" prevents your dog from picking up dangerous items, eating harmful foods, or fixating on distractions. This command has saved countless dogs from eating chocolate, picking up chicken bones, or chasing squirrels into traffic.

How to teach it: Hold a treat in both hands. Show one closed fist with a treat inside and say "Leave it." Ignore any pawing, licking, or sniffing. When they finally back away and make eye contact, praise them and give them the treat from your other hand (not the one they were trying to get). This teaches them that ignoring something gets them something better.

Training Tips for Success

Remember these key principles as you train:

• Keep sessions short: 5-10 minutes, 2-3 times daily is better than one long session
• Use high-value treats: Small, soft treats your dog loves (think tiny pieces of chicken or cheese)
• Be consistent: Everyone in the household should use the same commands and hand signals
• Practice everywhere: Once your dog knows a command at home, practice in the yard, on
walks, at the park
• End on success: Always finish training sessions with a command your dog knows well
• Stay positive: Never punish mistakes—simply withhold the reward and try again
• Be patient: Some dogs learn in days, others need weeks. Every dog is different
