How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Really Need?
Published: October 20, 2025 | By Rick, Professional Dog Walker at DogVaca
'How much exercise does my dog need?' This is one of the most common questions we hear at
DogVaca, and the answer isn't one-size-fits-all. Every dog has different exercise requirements based
on their breed, age, health, and individual personality.
After walking hundreds of dogs across Reston and Arlington, we've learned that proper exercise is
the foundation of a happy, healthy dog. Let's break down what your dog really needs.
Exercise Needs by Breed Group
High-Energy Breeds (60-120+ minutes daily)
Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Jack Russell Terriers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds. These working breeds were bred for endurance and need vigorous daily exercise plus mental stimulation.
Age Matters: Exercise by Life Stage
Adult Dogs (1-7 years)
Follow breed guidelines above. This is their peak energy period, and consistent exercise prevents behavioral problems.
