Understanding Your Dog's Body Language

Understanding Your Dog's Body Language

Published: October 10, 2025 | By Rick, Professional Dog Trainer at DogVaca

Dogs are constantly communicating with us—we just need to learn their language. While dogs can't speak with words, they're incredibly expressive through body language, facial expressions, and vocalizations.
After working with hundreds of dogs at DogVaca, I've learned that understanding canine body language transforms your relationship with your dog. You'll recognize stress before it escalates, understand their needs better, and respond appropriately to their emotions.

The Tail: More Than Just Wagging

Most people think a wagging tail always means happiness—not true! The tail tells a complex story:

Stiff, Slow Wag

Uncertainty or potential aggression. This dog is assessing a situation.

Circular Wag (helicopter tail)

Pure joy! Usually seen when you come home.

Stress Signals: When Your Dog Is Uncomfortable

Many stress signals are subtle. Learn to recognize them:

• Lip licking (when not food-related)

• Raised paw

• Yawning (when not tired)

• Stiff body

• Panting (when not hot or exercising)

Dilated pupils

• Whale eye (showing whites of eyes)

• Excessive shedding

• Turning head away

• Seeking escape routes
