Winter Dog Care: Keeping Your Pup Safe and Warm

Published: October 28, 2025 | By Rick, DogVaca Founder

As temperatures drop and winter approaches here in Virginia, many pet parents wonder how to keep their dogs safe and comfortable during the colder months. While some dogs love the cold and thrive in winter weather, others need extra protection and care. At DogVaca, we provide year-round dog care services, and we've learned a lot about keeping dogs happy and healthy through every season. Here's your complete guide to winter dog care.

Understanding Your Dog's Cold Tolerance

Not all dogs handle cold the same way. Several factors affect how well your dog tolerates winter weather:

Breed and Coat Type

Dogs with thick double coats (Huskies, Malamutes, German Shepherds) are built for cold weather. Short-haired breeds (Greyhounds, Chihuahuas, Pit Bulls) have less natural protection and get cold quickly.

Size

Smaller dogs lose body heat faster than larger dogs because they have more surface area relative to their body mass. Toy breeds and puppies are especially vulnerable.

Age and Health

Senior dogs, puppies, and dogs with health conditions like arthritis or diabetes have reduced ability to regulate body temperature.

Body Condition

Dogs who are underweight have less insulation. Overweight dogs may tire more easily in the cold.

Signs Your Dog Is Too Cold

Learn to recognize when your dog is uncomfortable in the cold:

  • Shivering or trembling – The most obvious sign
  • Whining or barking – Vocal complaints about discomfort
  • Slowing down or reluctance to walk – They want to go back inside
  •  Lifting paws off the ground – Cold or painful paws
  •  Hunched posture – Trying to conserve body heat
  •  Seeking warm spots – Trying to curl up or find shelter
  • Anxiety or looking for you – Seeking comfort and warmth
